IAU Colloquium #184: AGN Surveys
Devoted to B.E. Markarian’s memory
June 18-22, 2001, Byurakan, Armenia
AGN surveys are the source for the most interesting objects in the
Universe: QSOs, Seyfert galaxies, blazars,
radiogalaxies, LINERs, etc. Several dozen well-known surveys, principally at
optical/UV and radio wavelengths, have been conducted over the years and
revealed thousands of AGN, while just recently, new surveys in the farIR/submm and at X-ray
wavelengths have discovered a substantial new population of obscured AGN that
appear to reside both in normal galaxies as well as in faint, heavily reddened
hosts. The matching of these surveys leads to the discovery of large amount of
new AGNs. One of the most important problems is the study of evolutionary and
physical connections between different types of objects, which will be possible
by accumulating data by multiwavelength observations and their overall
analysis. We appear to be entering into a golden age for AGN research. Multiwavelength datasets are raising challenging new questions about the origin and
evolution of AGN and their relationship to galaxy formation.
The IAU Col.
184 on AGN surveys was devoted to the memory of B.E. Markarian, who was the
first to conduct a systematic large-area survey for active galaxies and
discovered 1500 UV-excess galaxies, later named Markarian galaxies.
Byurakan Observatory is famous in surveys and discovery of new objects,
especially extragalactic ones. Beside the Markarian or First Byurakan Survey (FBS), Shakhbazian
compact groups of compact galaxies, Arakelian galaxies with bright nuclear
regions (including many AGN), Kazarian galaxies, the Second Byurakan Survey (SBS) quasars and active galaxies are well
known.

B. Rocca-Volmerange, J. Stepanian, H. Smith, Y.
Taniguchi, S. Veilleux, W. Voges, L. Wisotzki), 15 contributed oral talks, and 45 posters.
The IAU
Colloquium 184 in Byurakan showed that building "complete" samples at
various wavelengths was certainly necessary. The survey specialists exchanged
the acquired experience, compared different surveys, discussed methodological
problems, and elaborated a strategy for further investigations. It was helpful
for planning the most efficient way to make significant advances in the field:
plan future surveys best fitted to improve our knowledge about AGNs, coordinate
observations with large ground-based and space telescopes, construct as
homogeneous as possible sample of AGNs over the whole sky, obtain an overall
patterns of the distant Universe and understand AGN phenomena and the related
evolution of galaxies.
