IAU Symposium #194: Activity in Galaxies and Related Phenomena
Devoted to V.A. Ambartsumian’s 90th anniversary
August 17-21, 1998, Byurakan, Armenia
IAU Symp. 194 was devoted to V.A. Ambartsumian’s 90th
anniversary, who was the first astrophysicist who understood what a rich
treasure was hidden under the activity phenomena in galaxies. In 50-s he began
with his collaborators his systematic investigations in this field and obtained
really very impressive results concerning various evidences of the activity in
galaxies. In the last forty years a vast amount of observational data was
accumulated. Moreover,
nowadays collection of new data takes place with an increasing rate. And
now when a great quantity of observational data on active phenomena is provided
owing to new technology it was necessary to discuss the results more often. There
was a need to display the main tendencies in physical explanations of the
phenomena in question as well as in the observational possibilities. Ground-based
new large telescopes and especially HST provided astronomers not only with a
new amount of data but gave them qualitatively new type information which should
be comprehended in connection with the established physical laws.

100 scientists
from 22 countries (USA, Japan, China, Mexico, Australia, UK, Germany, France,
Italy, Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Switzerland, Ireland, Bulgaria, Brazil,
Egypt, Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Georgia, and Armenia) participated in the
symposium, including 70 foreign (13 from former USSR), and 30 from Armenia.
Among the participants, there were a number of distinguished scientists, such
as Halton Arp, Kenneth Kellermann, Jack Sulentic,
Daniel Weedman, David Sanders, Suzy Collin-Zahn,
Malcolm Longair, Patrick Osmer, Vahe Petrosian,
Yervant Terzian, Francesco Bertola, Felix Mirabel, Ian Robson, Philippe Veron, Gerard Lelievre, Thierry
Courvoisier, Richard Lovelace, Alexei Fridman,
Michael Dopita, and others.
Altogether 136
contributions were presented, including 27 invited reviews on the invitation of
the SOC of the Symposium (by H. Arp (2), W. Baan, A. Boyarchuk, Georg Brutian, S. Collin-Zahn, T. Courvoisier,
M. Dopita, A. Fridman, T. Kawaguchi, K. Kellermann, E.
Khachikian, J. Krolik, M. Longair, R. Lovelace, F.D. Macchetto, F. Mirabel, P. Osmer, V. Petrosian, I. Robson
(2), M. Romanova, R. Sambruna, D. Sanders, M.
Turatto, Y. Terzian, and D. Weedman), 25 contributed oral talks, and 84
posters.
The
IAU Symp. 194 in
Byurakan was important from the point of view of
putting together various multiwavelength data on AGN and their interpretation
in view of the unified model. The experts discussed multiwavelength properties
of different AGN and elaborated strategy for their further studies.
