Development of Armenian-Georgian Virtual Observatory (ArGeVO)

The huge amount of astronomical information obtained in BAO NAS RA and GeNAO during last 70 years on about 30 thousand photographic plates and films has very high importance for comparative and joint analyses with other data obtained in various (ground based and space) observatories. All the digitized information available at BAO NAS RA serves as a base for the creation and development of the Armenian-Georgian Virtual Observatory. At this phase of works ArGeVO has to create a standard environment for utilization of all the available at the BAO NAS RA and GeNAO data and integration it in the International Virtual Observatories Alliance. On the other hand the present-day online research demands new communication possibilities. The point is that the amount of information at the observatories all over the world increases with an accelerating rate. After 1m Schmidt camera at the BAO NAS RA is modernized, for instance, it will be able to provide up to 1GB information every observational night. With other BAO NAS RA telescopes one will obtain twice more information. Thus, very soon the amount of useful information to be analyzed or elaborated for any scientific purposes will be measured by TBs. This information is very valuable and needs to be shared with colleagues from USA and European countries, who have already expressed interest in it. Moreover, frequently it is necessary that foreign participants jointly working in these programs could have immediate access to the newly achieved data. Thus, undoubtedly the VO ideology from the very beginning was and is based on the GRID technologies, as it requires a high-speed Internet and tools for processing and analyses of large catalogues and other data. Digitization of astrophysical information accumulated at GeNAO should be done using the methods elaborated at BAO NAS RA as well (the Digitized First Byurakan Survey is one of the world largest spectroscopic databases). Similar problems arise while a modeling of astrophysical phenomena dealing with multi-million objects each of those characterized by a set of physical parameters is initiated. It is absolutely certain that the more detailed models able to describe astrophysical phenomena request huge computational spaces and vast number of mathematical operations to be done in an acceptable period of the time. Examination of multi-parameter model problems makes possible of discussing the corresponding inverse problems and finding some of real parameters from the appropriately chosen set of observational data.

Work-plan

of the Byurakan Astrophysical Observatory (BAO) group

in frame of ISTC project A1606:

“Development of Armenian-Georgian Grid Infrastructure and

Applications in the Fields of High Energy Physics, Astrophysics and Quantum Physics”

The astrophysical part of the ISTC project A1606 is the continuation of the work started in frame of the ISTC project A1451, which supports the digitization of the First Byurakan Survey (FBS) plates and creation of the Digitized First Byurakan Survey (DFBS) spectroscopic database, as well as the creation of necessary working environment, the Armenian Virtual Observatory (ArVO), using the world databases and the newly created DFBS. The collaboration is being carried out with the Institute of Informatics and Automation Problems (IIAP, NAS RA), where the ArmCluster is located. A dedicated DFBS and ArVO servers have been installed. A mirror site of the DFBS Roma web portal is being created and developed for further applications. ISTC project A1606 will allow the creation and development of astrophysical tasks in GRID Infrastructure, development of joint Armenian-Georgian VO environment, further digitization projects and creation of full database of astronomical plates available at BAO and GENAO.
